Improve your art skills
People often tell me they “can’t draw.” They aren’t artistic. But here’s the thing: art skills are something you have to learn.
We aren’t born knowing how to write paragraphs or do long division. Why are we led to believe we are either born with artistic skills or we aren’t?
I take loads of art classes because even though I’ve been creating for years, there is always something to learn. New techniques. New tools I haven’t used before. New mediums. It is all so fun, and there are so many talented artists on the web sharing the skills they’ve learned. The information to improve your art skills is all there for the taking if you are willing to learn, and more importantly, are willing to suck at first.
Here’s the deal: Art involves an ugly adolescent phase. It’s when what you’ve started to create looks nothing like what you envisioned, but it’s on its way to being something beautiful if you keep moving forward. The ugly phase is just part of the process. If you can expect it and move through it - be it on canvas, or in life - you’re on the path to improving.
Giving up will not give you better results, but when you persist? Sometimes, you make ✨Magic✨
Here are some of the platforms and teachers I’ve learned from and enjoyed in recent years:
-Let’s Make Art: Monthly art boxes are available for watercolor or acrylic painting. The free tutorials on their YouTube channel are also excellent!
-Skillshare offers tons of classes in various mediums. Some of my favorite instructors are Peggy Dean (mixed mediums), Brent Eviston’s Art and Science of Drawing courses, and Jane Davies watercolor classes.
-For Procreate art, I’ve learned a lot from Lisa Bardot and Cat Couquillette’s classes on Skillshare.
-Domestika also offers loads of online art courses.
-If you aren’t an online learner, look to Facebook or Google for art classes near you. A once weekly drawing, painting, or pottery class might be just the thing to give you the creative outlet you crave.
I hope this list is helpful. If you have suggestions, please share them!
Cheers-
Bridget
